World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day: Celebrating the Power of Exercise

Today, 23 September, is World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day — a day to recognise the important role Clinical Exercise Physiologists play in helping people improve their health, function and quality of life through exercise.
At Innovate Exercise Physiology, we’re proud to be part of a profession that helps people move better, feel stronger and live more independently.
But what exactly is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist, and how can they help you?
What is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist?
A Clinical Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is an allied health professional who specialises in using exercise as part of the prevention, management and treatment of a wide range of health conditions, injuries and physical limitations.
Unlike a general fitness program, exercise physiology involves individual assessment, clinical reasoning and personalised exercise prescription.
An AEP considers your health history, current abilities, goals, medications, symptoms, injuries and lifestyle before developing an exercise program that is appropriate for you.
The goal isn't simply to exercise harder.
The goal is to exercise smarter.
Who can benefit from Exercise Physiology?
Exercise physiology can benefit people across a wide range of ages and abilities.
At Innovate Exercise Physiology, we regularly work with people managing:
Osteoarthritis and joint pain
Osteoporosis
Diabetes and pre-diabetes
Cardiovascular disease
Chronic pain
Neurological conditions
Obesity and metabolic health concerns
Reduced strength and mobility
Falls risk and balance concerns
Musculoskeletal injuries
Cancer and cancer-related health concerns
Age-related loss of muscle and physical function
Multiple chronic health conditions
You don't need to be an experienced exerciser to benefit from exercise physiology.
In fact, many of the people we work with are starting from exactly where they are today:
whether that's after an injury, following a health diagnosis, or simply noticing that everyday activities are becoming more difficult.
Exercise is more than just fitness
One of the things we love about exercise physiology is that the benefits of exercise extend far beyond simply becoming fitter.
Appropriately prescribed exercise can help improve:
Strength – making everyday activities such as getting out of a chair, carrying groceries or climbing stairs easier.
Balance and mobility – helping you move with greater confidence and reducing your risk of falls.
Cardiovascular health – improving your body's ability to use oxygen and supporting heart and lung health.
Bone health – resistance and weight-bearing exercise can play an important role in maintaining bone strength.
Mental wellbeing – regular physical activity can support mood, confidence and overall wellbeing.
Independence – perhaps most importantly, maintaining physical capacity can help you continue doing the things that matter to you.
We measure what matters
At Innovate Exercise Physiology, we believe exercise should have a purpose.
That's why we don't simply give you a list of exercises and send you on your way.
Where appropriate, we use objective measures to track changes in strength, mobility, balance, function and other important outcomes.
We use technology such as VALD Health alongside functional assessments and clinically appropriate questionnaires to help us understand where you are starting from and how you're progressing.
This allows us to answer an important question:
Is your exercise program actually making a difference?
Because progress isn't always about lifting more weight or exercising for longer.
Sometimes progress is being able to get out of a chair more easily.
Walking further without needing to stop.
Feeling more confident on your feet.
Returning to an activity you thought you had lost.
Or simply feeling stronger and more capable in everyday life.
Exercise physiology is for everyone
You don't have to be an athlete, you don't have to be young, you don't have to be "fit".
And you certainly don't have to know what you're doing when you walk through the door.
Exercise physiology is about meeting you where you are and helping you move towards where you want to be.
For some people, that might mean returning to sport after an injury. For others, it might mean managing a chronic health condition. For many of our clients, it's simply about maintaining their strength, independence and quality of life as they get older.
